Responsible Gambling

Gambling should be entertainment you can afford, never a way to make money or escape problems. This responsible gambling guide shows you how to stay in control, spot the warning signs and find free, confidential help in your country.

Five rules for safer gambling
  • You must be 18 or older, or older where local law requires, to gamble.
  • Set a budget and a time limit before you start, and stick to them.
  • Treat money you gamble as the cost of entertainment, not an investment.
  • Never chase losses or gamble to solve money problems.
  • Free, confidential help is available. Some helplines are open 24/7.

Our commitment to responsible gambling

BonusTrace exists to help adults understand casino offers before they sign up, and that includes understanding the risks. In practice this means we:

  • show significant conditions such as wagering, maximum bet, expiry and withdrawal caps next to each offer, not hidden in small print;
  • never target our content at anyone under 18;
  • don’t use fake urgency, countdown timers or “risk-free” claims;
  • explain that a bigger bonus isn’t automatically a better offer;
  • cover each casino’s player-protection tools, such as limits, time-outs and self-exclusion, in our reviews.

How to stay in control

Set a budget before you play

Decide how much you can afford to lose, an amount that won’t affect your bills, savings or family, and stop when it’s gone. Use deposit limits so the budget is enforced for you.

Set a time limit

It’s easy to lose track of time. Set a session limit or a reality-check reminder in your casino account, or use an alarm on your phone.

Never chase losses

Trying to win back what you’ve lost usually leads to bigger losses. Accept a loss as the cost of the entertainment and walk away.

Don’t gamble when you’re vulnerable

Avoid gambling when you’re stressed, upset, lonely or drinking, and never gamble with borrowed money.

Keep gambling in balance

Take regular breaks and make sure gambling is just one of many things you do for fun.

Understand bonuses before you claim them

Bonuses often come with conditions that affect how you play. A wagering requirement tells you how much you must stake before bonus funds, and sometimes winnings, can be withdrawn.

Example (fictional): you deposit €100 and receive a €100 bonus with 35× wagering on the bonus. You’d need to place €3,500 in total bets before you can withdraw. If only 10% of your stakes on your chosen game count, that becomes €35,000. Turnover is the total you stake. It isn’t a guaranteed loss, and it doesn’t guarantee winnings either.

Also check the maximum bet allowed while a bonus is active, which games count, any cap on winnings and the expiry date. If a bonus would push you to play more than you planned, it’s fine to say no.

Warning signs of problem gambling

Gambling may be becoming a problem if you:

  • spend more money or time gambling than you intended;
  • chase losses or gamble to win back money;
  • borrow money, sell belongings or miss bills because of gambling;
  • hide or lie about your gambling to family or friends;
  • feel anxious, irritable or low when you aren’t gambling;
  • gamble to escape stress, boredom or other problems;
  • neglect work, study, relationships or sleep because of gambling;
  • have tried to cut back but haven’t been able to.

Quick self-check

Think about the last 12 months. Have you:

  1. bet more than you could really afford to lose?
  2. needed to gamble with larger amounts to get the same excitement?
  3. gone back another day to try to win back money you lost?
  4. borrowed money or sold anything to get money to gamble?
  5. felt that you might have a problem with gambling?
  6. felt that gambling has caused you health problems, including stress or anxiety?
  7. been criticised for your gambling, or told you have a problem, whether or not you thought it was true?
  8. felt your gambling has caused financial problems for you or your household?
  9. felt guilty about the way you gamble or what happens when you gamble?

These questions are based on the Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI). If you answered “sometimes” or more often to any of them, consider talking to one of the free support services below. It’s confidential and you don’t have to give your name.

Tools that help you stay in control

  • Deposit limits – cap how much you can deposit per day, week or month.
  • Loss and wager limits – cap how much you can lose or stake over a set period.
  • Session limits and reality checks – get reminders of how long you’ve been playing, or log out automatically.
  • Time-outs – take a short break, from 24 hours to several weeks.
  • Self-exclusion – block access for months or years, with one casino or across many through national schemes such as GAMSTOP, Spelpaus, BetStop or MGA Self-Barring.
  • Blocking software – free tools like BetBlocker block gambling sites and apps on your devices.
  • Bank gambling blocks – many banks let you block gambling transactions in their app.

Worried about someone else?

Gambling harm affects partners, families and friends too. If you’re worried about someone:

  • choose a calm moment to talk, and focus on how their gambling affects you rather than blaming them;
  • avoid lending money or paying off gambling debts, which can make the problem last longer;
  • look after yourself – GamCare, Gambling Therapy and many national helplines also support affected others.

Protecting children and teenagers

Gambling is for adults only. Keep your devices and accounts protected:

  • never share casino logins, payment cards or passwords;
  • log out of gambling accounts and don’t let browsers save your passwords;
  • use parental controls or filtering software on devices that children use;
  • talk to children about the risks of gambling, including gambling-like features in games.

Responsible gambling FAQs

Can gambling be a way to make money?

No. Casino games are designed so that the house has an advantage over time. Some sessions end in a win, but over the long run most players lose more than they win. Treat any money you gamble as the cost of entertainment.

Are casino bonuses free money?

No. Most bonuses come with wagering requirements, maximum bet rules, game restrictions and expiry dates. They can also encourage you to play longer than you planned. It’s always fine to decline a bonus.

What is self-exclusion?

Self-exclusion lets you block yourself from gambling for a set period, usually from six months to several years. You can self-exclude with a single casino or, in many countries, through a national scheme such as GAMSTOP (Great Britain), Spelpaus (Sweden), BetStop (Australia) or MGA Self-Barring (Malta).

How do I set a deposit limit?

Most licensed casinos have a “Responsible gambling”, “Safer gambling” or “Limits” section in your account settings where you can set daily, weekly or monthly deposit limits. Decreases usually apply straight away, while increases typically involve a waiting period.

I'm worried about someone else's gambling. What can I do?

Talk to them calmly at a good moment, focusing on how their gambling affects you rather than blaming them. Organisations such as GamCare and Gambling Therapy also offer free support for family members and friends.

Is online gambling legal where I live?

It depends on your country and sometimes your region. Check your national gambling regulator’s website. Never use a VPN or false details to gamble somewhere it isn’t permitted.

Need to talk to someone?

Free, confidential gambling support is available in your country. Some helplines are open 24/7.
